Re: Fwd: translation

While your point is well taken, let me run a scenario by you that is more along the lines of what Tom is talking about. Periodically, on another list, someone will post a link to a draft of something--a new Web site, a book cover--and solicit an honest critique. I'm much more comfortable doing so privately. Ripping and shredding someone's work in public is unseemly, I think, even though other list members do it. I much prefer to communicate honestly in private. That way I don't appear to be grandstanding for the purpose of public humiliation. Instead, my comments can be taken as their intended, as constructive criticism of the object in question, not an attack on the designer.
I think the way techwr-l is set up is the better way to go. It's much easier to resend something you forgot to send to the list than to withdraw something that should not have gone to the list.
I agree with your scenario and also agree with keeping
the list reply setting as it currently is. My reply to Tom
was probably a bit harsh but I have seen enough nasty email
in my time to tend to take the opportunity to encourage
people not to send it whenever possible.
