I agree with John G here. When I've been on contract there have been two
distinct situations and I'd treat them differently:
1 I took a contract to do a specific job - write a user guide for
product X or whatever. In that instance I've agreed to do the job for a
fixed price or a set hourly rate and, barring any breaches of the
contract by the employer, I'll finish the job. Of course, depending on
the work, there's nothing to prevent me working on multiple contracts as
long as they can all be serviced :-)
2 'Open-ended' contracts. Here I've been hired at an agreed hourly
rate to work on a project/projects as required. Often I'm one of several
writers on a rolling month/3 monthly/whatever contract. This I see as
simply another job and would have no problem leaving, giving the
pre-requisite notice of course.
