TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Reminds me of last weekend. My wife and I were at a wedding reception.
During the meal at our table, we were talking about our day jobs. A
gentleman <who prefaced his comments with "I'm retired now"> said that
he had worked in the insurance industry as a programmer and then moved
into marketing. He continued to say that he had also spent many years
writing procedures for users so that they would know what to do with the
software. My eyes lit up.

How 'bout when someone - anyone - asks you what you do. You tell them
and they repeat back to you that you're a programmer or "software
engineer" or something.
Lots of the general public doesn't even know what a technical writer
is...
