I don't know where this idea came from. The sun appears in the morning. The
friends appear in a play. There appears to be some conflict. These are none
of them magical happenings, and never have been. The dialog box appears
before your very eyes. So what if the same word is used of ghosts or hatted
rabbits? English uses one word in multiple ways as a matter of course.
Now if you said: And then, y'know, the dialog box just like appears, that
would be different. But we don't do that.
