As a data point on the "appears" question: I have an Apple style
guide from 1994. It says:
"A dialog box _appears_, or the application program _presents_ or
_displays_ a dialog box."
Some people have mentioned that in the early days of windows-based
computing dialog boxes appearing was considered magical and confusing
to users and thus the contraindication against "appears." I also
happen to have the original Macintosh 128K manuals from 1984 and "a
dialog box appears" is used frequently and consistently throughout.
