TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Very true. At my former company, we interviewed a candidate who seemed to
fit the job description very well. When the HR manager informed my manager
and I that he was on his cell phone in the company lobby, arguing with his
girl friend, he was crossed off the list of potential candidates and his
resume discarded.
I am now permanently employed after 2 years of contracts, but I always have
and will be polite to the receptionist, maintenance folks, cleaning crew
etc.

I don't remember where I read this tip - probably on TECHWR-L itself,
or in an article linked from a post - but it apparently hasn't been
posted yet:
Be courteous to everyone at the company, not just the people you're
interviewing with. Even if you're nervous, be polite and cordial with
the security officer(s)/receptionist(s)/secretary(ies) you need to
deal with, in order to get to your interview. At some companies, these
staff have a sizeable input to the hiring process, based on their
observation of your character and personal skills *outside* the
interview room.
All the best,
Ed.
