Not very likely. If you walk away, you're not eligible for unemployment
compensation. If you're "shown the door," you are eligible -- unless
you punch the boss, steal equipment, or otherwise give them an excuse to
fire you "with cause" during the interim.
Those unemployment benefits come out of the company's pocket. Here in
Colorado, it happens indirectly -- for all but new companies, the
unemployment tax rate is "experience-based," and adjusted upward to
recapture the benefits paid to the comany's ex-employees (plus
administrative overhead). In other states, the details may differ, but I
suspect the net effect is about the same.
Bottom line: even if they're scum, this trick could cost them much more
than it's worth.
