Subject:master and slave From:"F. Marc de Piolenc" <piolenc -at- archivale -dot- com> To:techwr-l -at- lists -dot- techwr-l -dot- com Date:Sun, 18 Mar 2007 20:14:30 +0800
"This also illustrates the aptness of the "master" and "slave" nomenclature.
While "primary" and "secondary" could easily enough have been used, the fact
remains that they were not. It is also useful to use very short names due to
the physical limitations of space for labeling on the drive labels and such,
I suppose."
It wouldn't work to say "primary" and "secondary" for "master" and
"slave," because users would confuse the status of the drives with
the designations of the (usually) two IDE *channels,* each of which
is capable of accomodating two drives. For instance, my hard drive is
connected and jumpered as primary master, my CD-R/W as secondary master.
