TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
For a multiproduct based company, I guess subject areas could simply
refer to the product name it self i.e
xxxproduct/man/001/050702
or a subject area could be taken to refer to
database/faq/001/030402
tech/man/001/020304
admin/tra/002/030406
I know there are choices to be made. This has been helpful. But yeah,
with so many documents, its important to get it as 'right' as possible
to avoid having to change the convention later.

You might find it helpful to organize by subject
matter as well, perhaps something like this:
subject area/doc type/number/date (i.e. version)
