On another TW/TC list, one writer reported that he and his group have
been given praise lately for their documentation. (A loose summary
follows:)
It all came about because of his attention to the sales people and their
input about things that should be included, and his interactions with
one of the sales people. It turns out sales closed an important deal on
the basis of the documentation, and they then sent a note to others in
the company commenting on that fact.
I wish I could quote the thread--it's not only encouraging but has a
number of good suggestions for making the documentation more central to
the products, and for helping out the sales force.
Regards,
Kathleen

Would your manager be willing to talk directly to the SVP & ask that
the SVP use a less demeaning term to refer to the writers?
Another suggestion - ask your manager to publicize the work your team
does. On a regular basis (weekly, monthly) send to MGT a list of your
group's contributions and their impact to other groups, the company, and
the bottom line.

After a recent all-hands meeting, in which a senior VP referred to us
as scribes, these developers started walking around snapping, "Hey, tech
writer, go scribe; jot that down".
My manager is disgusted and wants to call a meeting. He wants to spend
an hour extolling the virtues of the tech writers. Uh...no, I can't
subscribe to this approach.
