I faced a similar situation at my current company, except I was referred to
as a Documentalist. (The boss now says it sometimes as a joke, but has the
sensibility to duck when he says it, so I know he's joking!).
I spent a lot of time and effort proving my value to the various areas of
the company, and specifically sales. Everyone now knows that I am NOT a font
fondler, and there isn't an area of the company that it exempt from my
involvement and review, including sales proposals, websites, marketing
materials, etc. I don't "pretty up" documents - I review and rewrite for
logical flow, consistency, grammar, etc. Sales prospects have commented on
the quality of our manuals and online help.
I also post a list of current projects on my door, so everyone can see what
I'm involved in.
