Back in the ancient days I spent a huge amount of time and effort
learning the military numbering and indenting system. Omigosh, we ended
up sometimes with 14-decimal heading numbers and only 1.5" for the text
that went with it. Ridiculous. I think I finally threw out that nasty
old book at my last move, but it could still be lurking in storage
somewhere.
Now I go no lower than four levels of heading and prefer three. If it
seems like more are needed, it's more likely that it's time for a table.
The above guideline applies unless a boss or other customer specifically
requires otherwise.
