So, what IS the 'formal career path' for a Tech Writer?
Ohh wait, there usually isn't one. Up to Senior, Team Lead, Manager then..
yeah.. sideways? Product Management, Usability? Do we care?
I quite like "generalising in specialising" (to misquote a recently read
article) and wear my "Jack of all trades, master of many" t-shirt with
pride.

I was actually told by one major Fortune 100 employer that they only
employed tech writers as agency-based or independent contract workers
because they didn't have a formal career path for them! They had a tech
writer who had been grinding along at the same job for 12 years without
permanent status or benefits.
I worked for them for two years anyway. By the second year it was just too
hard to watch $2000 annual employee bonuses being handed out to six-month
new hires while I didn't even get a thank you card, so I moved on with my
life and out of the area.
The company has since fallen on very hard times and it couldn't have
happened to a more deserving bunch of imbeciles.
