> So, what IS the 'formal career path' for a Tech Writer?
That's up to each and every one of you to define for yourselves. You
define your career path (unless you expect your company to tow you
along while you nap). Your company defines the role maturity model for
your position.

You should care if you're serious about your career, but again, this
is up to you to plan, not your employer. They just need people to get
work done, and need a way of rewarding/paying those who function at
various levels.

Me, I get my hands in just about anything and everything I can at
work, and then enjoy making and depleting homebrew in the evening.
