The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Doing is probably the easiest way to learn L.A.M.P. development, in conjunction with the textbooks you've already got. To that end, you could install a L.A.M.P. setup on your own LINUX or Windows machine. Though it doesn't provide for the installation of Perl, http://apacheguide.org/ does provide a fairly foolproof set of instructions that lead the way through the installation of a number of packages geared toward setting up L.A.M.P. As for Perl, it's also pretty easy to install: the process involves little more than downloading the Perl package from http://www.cpan.org/ , installing it, and configuring Apache for its use.
If you'd like to know more, contact me off-list. I personally run "L.A.M.P." for development purposes on a dual-booted x486 Solaris and Windows box, and have done so for a number of years now.
