TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I use a program called Freemind. I find it's really
useful for building outlines of documents so you can
decide how to chunk information. It lets you do branch
diagrams (decision trees) that can be color coded,
notes attached to each nodes, etc. You can use
different sizes and colors of fonts to indicate
information types according to DITA rules, and various
other things.
Branches can be expanded or collapsed kind of like the
folder structure views in Windows Explorer. You can
also put in graphic links between items (topics) that
show logical relationships.
And, Freemind will generate output as a text file or
in HTML. So you can use it to set up a skeleton
structure for a web site, then generate the files that
go into the site structure, complete with hyperlinks.
