Since my name is being used in this never ending argument about whether a
TWer should have engineering experience or not, I would say that all our
past experiences makes us perform better at whatever position we are
currently involved. My background, just as a lot of fell old timers on this
list, includes a hefty amount of technology. But I am also a professional
photographer, award winning video producer, former magazine editor and
publisher, carpenter, farmer, marketing and operations manager, web
designer, dog musher, and I'm not bad with a wrench. I also have a degree in
journalism with a minor in computer science, and I'm a pretty good cook.
Others have taken different paths to become a successful technical writer.
No single path is the right path. Unfortunately, there are a lot of HR
people who haven't figured that out yet.....
