What version of Word are you using? Microsoft switched from Multiple
Document Interface (MDI) to Single Document Interface (SDI) so long ago
I'm not sure when. I think it was Word 2000. It may have been a
configurable choice when SDI was new, so maybe you're just not set up to
use it.
In SDI, each new document opens in its own top-level window (as opposed
to MDI, where multiple document windows reside within the application's
top-level window).
SDI doesn't mean there are multiple instances of Word running. When I
open 3 Word docs, all 3 appear on the taskbar, but Task Manager shows
that only one instance of Word is running.
