I considered that. It looks like I can do that for files maintained on my machine, but not for files on the network system.

I assume Acrobat still offers it's "watched folder" function? If so,
that's possibly all you need. Just check the docs on how to set up
this feature.
There's an older product called "BuildFire" (http://www.convivio.com/
index.php?topic=010_products) that might be useful for you if you
were using Frame, though the date of this release suggests it may no
longer be under active development. Still, I mention this for the
Framers in the group.
