That's not to say that it was guaranteed to be good or bug-free, but at least I could be pretty sure it wouldn't phone home with my credit details and health info... (not that I keep those on an employer computer, but there are also passwords and other sensitive things)

Weellll... how about handing me your credit details... and we'll find out!! <g>
I tend to trust GPLd or other Open-Source apps rather a lot because of
the oft-repeated concept that any malicious code is bound to be caught
by someone or the other looking at the source. In practice, how many
of us do that for the apps we use? It's practically an impossible
task... so unlike some other people who rail against using binary-only
stuff, I shrug my shoulders philosophically and go ahead and use it
when I need to. Case in point being nVidia 3D card drivers (and ATI
too, for a long time).
So, well... I guess you do need to be careful. I haven't even enabled
Internet banking on my bank account, because some of these banks run
MS IIS as their webserver (!), and have in all likelihood not secured
their HTML forms against SQL injection - or perhaps haven't even
escaped special characters in some of their fields (I had a foretaste
when the bank was trying to process my application for a debit card).
Sometimes convenience takes a back seat to keeping your hard-earned
money - so I quite understand your reluctance to install programs from
unknown companies on machines with sensitive info.
Anyway, in another thread you're already mooting running Windows in a
VM under Linux (I do exactly that), so you ought to not miss the
multi-desktop feature any more :-)
