Thunderbird for email (great compared with Outlook)
Firefox
IE 7 (for stuff Firefox still can't handle)
Office 2003 (better than 2000)
PaintShop Pro 8
SnagIt 9 (for special stuff that is easier than in PaintShop Pro)

When I got my new computer someone on the list strongly recommended that 
I try Thunderbird instead of Outlook. It is so much easier to set up and 
work with. I was able to install calendars and an additional language 
with no help whatsoever...
