To follow up:

- Tweets can have up to 140 characters. If a tweet contains more than
that, it gets truncated (unless being sent to a mobile phone, which
will get multiple SMS messages).

- Twitter is like a huge public IM application for everyone. Unless
you protect your updates, they are all available on both the public
timeline and your page. And, of course, anyone who follows you sees
your tweets, too.

- Search is available at http://search.twitter.com.

- Most folks use some kind of URL shortener to post links. (I use
is.gd now instead of tinyurl.com. Fewer characters ;-) )
