TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I've had to lie to a couple of friends, park my car in the garage, and tell
them I don't work at home much anymore. They kept "popping" in for for tea,
or phoning and asking if I was "off" today. I would keep saying, "No, I'm
not off, I'm working".
After a couple of years, it just became easier to lie.
I have a computer in my office upstairs, one in the basement, and a laptop
that allows me to work anywhere. The deck is not a good idea though (much as
I would love to work there) because the screen on my laptop doesn't handle
the brightness well and I can't see it.
Discipline is an important part of telecommuting. I log in usually at 6:30
in the morning. This allows me to goof off for a couple of hours during the
day - goof off meaning sometimes running errands, doctor's appointments,
etc. When I do though, I forward the house phone to my cell phone.
