TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I'm usually hesitant to share "the latest and greatest utility" du jour, but
this one impressed me enough to make it onto my Quick Lauch Bar.
SysExporter allows you to capture text from (most) standard list-views, list
boxes, and combo boxes on the screen. Tech writing uses:
* Copy the text of an error message into a bug tracking system.
* Copy and paste text from an "Options" dialog box into a document.
* Open the Modify Style box in Word and capture the characteristics of a
style to compare with another style.
* Search for files containing a string which needs to be changed. Capture
the contents of the Windows Search Results, and paste into Excel.
Voila--instant checklist to make sure I edit all of the files. (In the
past, I've used a Perl script to create such checklists. No more.)
Quite a few things don't show up, notably anything in Firefox or folder
trees in Outlook. So if you know of an even better "capture any text"
utility, let us know!
SysExporter is freeware, available from the publisher (nirsoft.net) and from
the usual places (download.com, etc). It's been around for many years, so
it seems unlikely to do anything harmful. I have no relationship whatsoever
with the creator.
