It's been my observation that a company's willingness to research documentation effectiveness is directly proportional to the ability of its products to maim or kill their users and result in liability lawsuits if used improperly. The extremes of this are probably represented by the work we did to measure reader comprehension of the launch system manuals for a multi-warhead ICBM back in the 80's and anything that can be downloaded off the internet today for a free 30-day trial.
