Let's say you have a personal Gmail account, and you'd like to be able
to check it quickly while you're at work to see if anything truly
important comes in--perhaps a message from a relative or close
friend--but you don't want to take all the time it requires to wade
through all the *other* stuff that fills your inbox. What do you do?
A new service expands the filters capability so you could set these
other types of messages to be delivered only after work hours, as one
example...or with a companion iPhone app, you could "push" the
important ones to your iPhone using the same filtering capability.
This service is called Syphir. You can read more about it on
Lifehacker at <http://lifehacker.com/5506164/syphir-adds-awesome-advanced-filters-to-gmail>
.
Another new service that makes Gmail more useful replaces the ads on
the left side wtih any results from social networking websites for the
person whom you are corresponding with. It's called Rapportive, and is
at <http://rapportive.com/>
Both of these were originally discussed on the blog "Read Write Web":
<http://www.readwriteweb.com> -- which itself is often extremely
helpful.
You know, I've *really* got to cut down on my Google Reader
subscriptions. At present, there are over seven hundred of them--but
then, being mostly retired has its benefits!
