To let y'all know that the latest on my daughter's Toshiba laptop
can't-go-online problem is due to the rogue anti-virus popup that she DID
actually click on.
After taking the HD out and scanning it via cable from my desktop PC with my own
completely updated Norton Internet Security 2010, it still wouldn't go
online. So we took it back to Microcenter where it and a 3-year "platinum
service plan" for it were purchased back in November 2007; we haven't spent a
cent on it since. The plan covers the $70 diagnosis fee and all hardware-only
problems.
I told the tech that we removed and scanned the hard drive with Norton, but he
said the problem is that the virus had installed a proxy and changed at least a
few of the registry entries in the laptop HD registry and that my Norton
apparently didn't scan the HD registry. In particular,
Yes, being a software problem, this will cost us just over $100 (Microcenter is
cutting about $60 off the fee to straighten everything up) but with nothing
spent on it in almost three years, I guess the fee can sort-of be justified (I
know I'm grasping for straws, but it's gotta be done). And I need my own desktop
back from my daughter.
