Well, I really, really appreciate the sarcasm. In fact, there's nothing
finer than the faint whiff of sarcasm. Imagine my surprise - I've only used
MS Word since Word v3 - that one might create a single TOC if one (dared)
use Master Document.
Of course, most of us who have made the mistake, in the past, of creating a
Master Document lived to regret it and have never used it again. Oh, my
mistake.
Cheers,

"Word can't do that"? Heh. If I don't know how to do something in Word, I
always say, "I don't know how to do that in Word." And then I go to the
Word-PC list, and someone there teaches me how to do it.
As Kath Bowman already pointed out, you *can* create a single TOC from
multiple Word files, and you don't need to know Word well (but you do need
to know how to Google). See: http://www.stcuk.org/newsletters/April2006/word-refdoc.htm
By the way, 400 pages isn't a particularly large document, but for that you
do need to know Word well. There are many articles online about taming large
docs, but they all require that you have control of the doc. If multiple
colleagues edit the same Word doc, you have to establish certain controls to
prevent others from mucking it up.

I suggest - strongly - that MS Word, in any version, not be used for large
documents. The problems with that word processing application, when applied
to desktop publishing, are well documented.
However, I don't want to be as arrogant as that suggests. I do not believe
you can create a single TOC from multiple Word files. Rather, I believe you
must start each separate, following document with the next page number from
its predecessor. At that point, you'll have to run separate TOCs for each
and copy & paste the succeeding tables into the first, in order.
Be sure to separate your TOCs by Section breaks that use a different page
numbering format, though.
