I've heard people say that the master document feature finally works, and
that's nice. But it certainly isn't the only way to combine multiple word
files into a single output file and create a single TOC. RD fields, which a
couple of other people have mentioned, have worked just fine for a long
time.
I can't speak for Word 3 (I was wedded to WordPerfect in those days), but I
used Word 6/95 extensively for large documents. Each chapter was in its own
Word file. Another Word file contained the title page, front-matter
(including TOC), and introduction. At the end of that file was a set of RD
fields, each pulling in a chapter file. (If the book had an index, it came
after the RD fields.)
That said, it couldn't hold a candle to the friendly large-doc environs of
FrameMaker. :-)
