As does economy. When I was laid off in 2008 there were very few full
time techcomm jobs out there. Of the ones out there, the majority were
entry level (I heard "overqualified" more times than I cared to) or
very, very specific in their candidate requirements. Contracting was
the only way for me to keep the lights on, and even then I was
underemployed. Contracting may be a choice for some, but for others
(like me and others I know) it was a necessity based on the job
market.
