TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Peter Neilson grumbled about certification maintenance:
> I cannot afford to go to any classroom three-days-a-week stuff…. I've not been to any seminar things since about 1985…. Apparently I am no longer a tech writer at all. I don't fit in the box.
I don't think we've firmly defined the "box," but it's going to be a lot bigger than the box you set yourself into. Ongoing professional development activities can include classes, but also seminars, conferences, papers, and chapter programs. They can be STC sponsored or sponsored by other associations, international, national, or local. It's your choice.
