Let me tell you a story of what happened when my wife worked as the
quality engineer for a manufacturer of high-quality technical fabric some
years ago.
The Marketing department would send her technical questions, and she would
answer them by writing reports.
One day she got a new boss who insisted that all reports were to go
through him. His plan was apparently to gain power. So she handed the
reports to him instead of passing them to Marketing.
The head of Marketing phoned her and said, "Where are the reports? You're
usually so fast." She said, "They're on my boss's desk, waiting for
approval."
He asked her to make copies and send them over, which she did, contrary to
her boss's intentions.
Shortly thereafter, her boss put in a request to have her fired. The
grounds? "She has been asked to produce reports for Marketing, but hasn't
written anything." At her exit interview with HR, she was told the grounds
for firing. She said, "You had better check with Martin, over in
Marketing."
The very next day her boss had been fired. She was retained.
Sometimes it does not hurt to have a friend in the Marketing department.
This is a hint.
