I'm an active voice kind of guy....Remove "We recommend that you" and
replace it with "Do." It's a shorter sentence and gets right to the
point....don't remove those covers of something bad will happen.

I've always thought the first construction is technically correct, though a
little odd. "I recommend you [verb]" is an acceptable construction, after
all, so the inversion 'not' should be fine. It does sound rather rigid,
though.
