An interviewer asked me the "Why are manhole covers round?" question,
just after there was a big discussion about it on Techwr-L. I answered
that the question had just been discussed on Techwr-L to suggest I am
involved with a community of TechCom professionals. I didn't get
hired; the interviewer posted nasty messages on websites and twitter
about "how difficult it is to find qualified help;" and I started
writing a blog post about the experience to help me to calm down.
Sometimes, it doesn't matter if the employer checks you out or not.
Some employers like the ones who cut to the chase and don't rally
around the flagpole all pollyanna like. Sometimes, the work just sucks
(for various reasons). Otherwise, you wouldn't be out looking for work
in the first place.
The sad part is that the layoff is a legitimate answer, but the
unemployed have more trouble finding work than those already employed.
Cheers,
-Tony
