A different perspective on this might be to just dump Word and switch to the free and file-compatible LibreOffice.

Being on a Mac, I still resent the way Office for Mac: includes all the bookmarking and html linking optionsm, but the underlying VB code doesn't work. You'd have thought they'd have either removed the options or re-coded it to work properly on a Mac when they ported it. Just laziness.
