The Radford surveys are a set of privately-collected data about employee
position descriptions and compensation. They're more reliable than BLS
data for technology-based hiring because unlike BLS data they are
categorized by technology sectors, so if you are a medical device company
and want to know what the common job descriptions and prevailing wages are
for people working in medical devices you aren't looking at data that
includes people working on aircraft or accounting software.
The salary increases required to bring up all the staff in that particular
company ranged from around $5,000 to over $10,000. Fortunately, this was
back in the 90's when it was actually possible to argue that we might lose
someone with 10+ years of product knowledge to some upstart company that
was selling pet food online.
