Sounds like a memory resource issue to me. Does Word repeat this behaviour all the time? Did you try restarting your computer? You might have too many things running on your computer at once, and not enough memory for Word to handle updating the link. I would try restarting your computer. I don't think it is an issue with your file, graphics, or links. Especially if pressing F9 does nothing.
