Yeah, I'm going to go with "surrounding region." Thanks to all.
For curious minds, I'm trying to describe different portions of a
potentially cancerous lesion. Radiologists want to assign a certain
suspicion level to a region they've marked on an MRI, but also have the
option of assigning a different suspicion level to a surrounding region
they have separately identified.
