I only glanced through the article but in my first writing job, I was titled a Technical Data Engineer.

The reason was we were doing engineering-type work. We took data (engineering drawings, specs, etc.) and created documentation from it.

We didn't go to SMEs - we WERE the SMEs.

That is a big change from most technical writers today who have to have an SME to do anything.
