"Variable"?
It would help if you could clarify your definition of 'ranging'. Do you mean that there's a fixed minimum and maximum # of possible nodes, and system variables determine which nodes are used, within that min/max range?
And if Fixed vs ranging refers to how many possible nodes can be applied at once, then I'd side with the engineers. Although the nodes used might vary, there is a fixed number that are used at the same time. So the NUMBER of nodes in play is constant, rather than dynamic (as in the "ranging" scenario).

Subject: need a word for "ranging"
Hello, WR-L-ers,
Iâm describing two behaviors:
* Fixed â The number of nodes is maintained at a fixed number. If a node fails, another one is powered on.
* Ranging â The number of nodes is maintained within the range from min to max, based on lots of system variables.
The engineers arenât fond of ârangingâ, and would prefer âdynamicâ. But the âfixedâ behavior is also dynamic because the system is powering on new nodes as needed. So I donât want to substitute âdynamicâ for ârangingâ.
So, any suggestions for a word to use instead of ârangingâ?
Thanks much,
And Happy US Thanksgiving,
-Monique
