Thanks all for your input and comments. Fortunately, the problem was only one character at the end of each paragraph for 17 paragraphs. I was able to backspace, delete, and type in the correct character which did come out as the correct font.
I tried pasting into a new document (without para symbols) -- font would not change.
Select and press Ctrl+Spacebar or Ctrl+Q or clear formatting -- NOTHING!
Weirdest issue I ever saw... but now the problem is fixed and hopefully will never happen again!
