I'm currently in grad school, so I considered joining because the rates are
considerably cheaper for students. However, I decided not to join when I
discovered that I *had* to join a collegiate chapter in addition to
whatever local chapter I joined. When I first looked into it, the nearest
collegiate chapter was 200 miles away. I've since moved, but the nearest
chapter is still too far to be valuable to me. Plus, it isn't of much value
to the collegiate chapter who will see me on their roster even though I'll
never attend anything.
I was also a bit turned off because students get a free SIG, but none of
the SIGs they offered me (I think I could pick from about six?) really
matched my interests. So I left the membership form half filled out. Every
once in a while I look at again, have the same "eh" reaction, and ignore it
again for another six months.
