My experience has been that age is not really that big a factor in
contract gigs, because agencies and clients will try to hire on the
cheap regardless of how old or young you are. And when you're trying to
hire on the cheap, overqualified isn't that big a factor either, because
more experience for less money is actually a good thing.
For "permanent" hires (are there really still companies trying to claim
there's such a thing?), I long ago concluded that what really turns
hiring managers off about older candidates is the fear that hiring
someone who is older and more experienced will bring on board someone
who knows more about their jobs than they do, might be better able to do
their jobs than they are and may more readily recognize and call out
various types and levels of management BS when they hear it.
