STC used to use a member survey, and my recollection is that the numbers they reported for Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area in general were pretty spot-on. But apparently, the numbers for the rest of the US were less so, hence the switch to BLS data. It doesn't surprise me that today we have the reverse situation.

Using the BLS data is pretty meaningless. In theory, it might be better to use STCâs membership number, which is a small percentage of the total set of tech writers and doesnât care what the business type is. If you use 10%, then the field of tech writers would be 40k. Unfortunately, few associations hit a number as high as 10% of the field. Consider, too, that STC had 24k members in 2005. That suggest the field had about 250k practitioners at the time. Even, if my crude calculations are off by a good bit, youâd be hard pressed to convince anyone that the field is growing worldwide.

This ruling is about what defines an independent contractor, not about how many people are in the labor market as one.

I doubt the BLS is doing data mining of business licenses, but if they are I still won't be in their technical writer numbers because my title is "Owner."

Local rules in places like San Jose require that 1099 consultants have a business license, so business license data could be of use, if that is available.
