The December 1990 issue of IEEE Transactions of Professional Communication
has an excellent article by David Farkas and Thomas Williams entitled
"John Carroll's Nurnberg Funnel and Minimalist Documentation." My
recollection of the article is that they undertake a fairly thorought
analysis of the concept.
