Jane Torpie shared some personal experiences and opinions that are
relevant to us in our complete role as technical communicators. In
particular, I appreciated the following excerpts:

>During my career, I've seen these skills lacking in the documentation
>community and have had fewer opportunities or role models than I would have
>liked so I could develop my skills.

>Creating and making a presentation is difficult, nervous-making work,
>especially for the inexperienced. But knowing how to present one's ideas in
>person is just as important as knowing how to present them in writing.
> Learning these is equally rewarding!

I hope our professional organizations (Society for Technical Communication,
IEEE's Professional Communication Society, or ACM's SIG-DOC) are promoting
oral communication as a valuable skill to develop and use.

I was delighted to read in previous postings from college-level instructors
of writing programs that they incorporate student presentation experiences
in the classroom.
