Do you happen to attend school? You can get student health coverage through
universities (but there may be restrictions on part-time students). I
would call the health insurance brokers (Prudential, CIGNA, to name a few)
and they may be able to direct you. You might also try purusing the phone
book and yellow pages. I just looked and I found a number for Health
Insurance Associates (404)565-4027 and Health Insurance Specialists
(404-982-9050). It's worth the dime to at least call to see if they can
direct.
Also, where do you live? I'm in Atlanta, GA and I see signs on corners at
freeway ramps which advertise affordable health insurance for
self-employed's. Unfortunately, I did not write down the numbers or names
because I get health insurance through my employment. I'm a contractor
also, but I'm an employee of the company who has the contractual arrangement
with the company where I work on site. You might think about looking for a
company that will do the same. They have quite a few here (in Atlanta).
Get going girl, you're risking a lot by not having any. I went for 2
years (twice in my life) without it, and fortunately nothing happened. I
was just plain lucky. But we all know you can't count on luck (at least
not good luck!) Speaking of which, good luck in your search.

I work as a contractor and thus do not receive health insurance from my
employer. I am becoming more and more concerned about this, especially as
I have an un-insured friend who had an accident recently and ended up paying
$10,000 out of his own pocket for medical expenses! My lack of health
insurance
is about
the only reason I have considered taking a full-time position with a
company.
I have checked into several different companies (such as Blue Cross) to
find
out about
their individual health insurance plans, but they seem to be either
exorbitantly
expensive
($200+/month for a 30-year old female - and that's WITHOUT maternity
coverage)
or have
exceedingly high deductibles ($1000-2000 is not uncommon).
Could anyone out there provide some pointers to how to find affordable,
reasonable health
insurance for the self-employed? Unfortunately (well, I usually think of it
as
fortunately) I
am not married - so I have no spouse's insurance to attach myself to.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
