Thanks to Karen, Johanna, Susan, Richard, Rlippinc, and others who
responded to my request for advice about a simple way for my parents
to index their music collection.

I'll probably take Karen's suggestion about using a Microsoft Word
table. I use Word all the time, both in Windows and on the Mac. I'm
surprised I didn't think of this approach myself. I can make the
table, give them some simple suggestions for using it, and help out
over the phone.

My guess is that this will do the trick. Should they need something
more elaborate later on, they'll know enough about computers to have
an idea about what they want. (I'll pass along all the suggestions I
received so they can make their own choice.)

Also, I agree that this simple task does not require a PowerPC and
that at PC clone would work just fine. (I still use a 386 at home
myself. I got it to be compatible with the computers at my last job.)
They probably wouldn't get a computer of any kind just to index their
music collection.

They want to use a computer in their music -- composing, transposing,
synthesizing, whatever. Their musician friends have all recommended
going the Macintosh route, and so have most things I've read. (I also
think that Macs are still much easier for beginners to learn on and
more fun to use.)

Low-end PowerPCs are currently going for about $2,400, including
keyboard, monitor & mouse, our here in LA. Since my parents can afford
the difference between that and the cost of a low-end Quadra, it seems
worth it to have that added capacity for future programs.

Thanks,
Dick
