I've been reading several tech writer lists today in an effort catch up with
my post-conference e-mail. We board members wanted to make our non-U.S.
attendees at the STC Annual Conference feel especially welcome, knowing that
they had to travel an extra distance to join us. We were delighted that 20
countries were represented at the conference.
My point is that STC is now, has been, and will be an *international*
organization. And now I would like you to repeat after me:
There is no STC National.
There is no STC National.
There is no STC National.
If you want to refer somebody to the STC Office, please call it the STC Office
or STC Headquarters. Do not call it "STC National." We don't have such a
thing. As a STC officer, I'm extremely proud of the growth STC is experiencing
among its non-U.S. membership. Canadian representation on our board and among
committee heads is at an all-time high (not that we set out to increase our
Canadian representation; Canadians happened to be the best people for the jobs
to which they are assigned). And participation is growing in other parts of
the globe too.
I don't intend to turn this into a rant, but I do want to make the point as
forcefully as I can that when you apply the term "National" to STC, you
unconsciously label many of our members as second-class citizens.
