Actually, in every tech writing position I have worked, I
was always de facto part of the product marketing team
for that particular product line.

I have always found this to be an excellent role. You
tend to hear first hand users' concerns re: documentaion,
and you can account for it asyou go along. Additionally,
sales and marketing staff usually end up better understanding
what the heck it is they are supposed to be selling, since
techwriters tend to know the most (next to programmers,
help desk staff, trainers, etc.) what it is the products do.

Also, it is a good way for writers to develop their own
marketing skills for further career advancement of their
own, as I have been able to do. {:-)
